This is why we need art, to not only make sense of and come to terms with our surroundings, but to find the beauty and balance in between two extremes. Each individual that looks at the piece of art is able to see something different, or find a different meaning than the person standing next to them, and there is no right or wrong answer. There is no right or wrong way to stroke a brush on canvas, there is no right or wrong way to interpret the meaning of a song. Granted there are codified techniques that help establish the basics, such as ballet, or major and minor scales on the piano, but there is always room for deviation. There is a different way to move, there is a different way to interpret an abstract painting, there is a different way to play a musical instrument. The possibilities are endless, and enticing to the hungry mind. These deviations and abstractions allow us the freedom to explore and develop our own unique voice.

For the sake of time, I filmed this dance to submit for my Capstone project. I originally planned on having at least seven dancers, but only three were able to commit due to time constraints. I plan on developing this project further after graduation with more dancers and live performances at several different venues. I may consider submitting my film to a few film festivals this year. With the continuation of this project, I will be able to further explore my choreographic style, establish a network base to draw upon for future works, and get my name out into the dance world. This choreographic project will be a platform to continue promoting dance and art to a mixture of people who may already support the arts, but may not know or understand the full extent of what could potentially happen if we don’t continue to promote fight for the value of the arts in society today.

I feel that promoting dance and art is imperative, as it is a strong expression of humanity. People become lost in their own virtual worlds behind screens, and forget about the world around them. I strongly believe that much of this is due to a culture that is attempting to move away from art and deny its value in education and appreciation. Without art, we lose our sense of imagination and curiosity. We lose our abilities to analyze and think as individuals. This is a great loss to me. Through dance I hope to make a small difference and become an advocate for the value of dance and art.

Dance and the arts are a way that we can become embodied and help our minds and bodies live in harmony. We can re-establish the value of the body and it’s role in engaging with our surroundings. Dance has helped my body learn how to speak for itself and understand what it means to be human. I chose to choreograph a dance for my capstone project because choreographing has allowed me to express myself in ways that I could not with words. I can create without boundaries, or chose my own boundaries to work within. I can tell a story with the human body.
